Want to spend your summer on one of Jamaica’s most pristine beaches? Perhaps you’d rather snorkel over a coral reef, visit the memorial of reggae legend Peter Tosh, or help reconstruct world history? You can do all of these things and more by enrolling in the Jamaica Archaeological Field School, located in historic Bluefields, Jamaica. This program provides students with practical training in both terrestrial and underwater archaeology. During the four weeks in Jamaica, students will spend approximately 3 weeks learning excavation skills at a hypothesized sixteenth-century Spanish fortification site replete with fortified walls, cannons, and other military material culture. The site is also home to a still-occupied British period great house, built during the 18th century. During the fourth week, students will learn both terrestrial and underwater survey techniques by conducting archaeological survey of the Bluefields coastline and exploring underwater in Bluefields Bay, which was as rich in history (and pirates!) as the town.
Group Air is required component of program package. Round-trip air transportation from cities other than CCSA-designated airports MAY be considered on a case-by-case basis at an additional cost.
